 History flying over East County 

 

Ever fly in a B-17? The opportunity is here. The Liberty Foundation is in El Cajon at the Gillespie Airfield with the ‘Liberty Belle,’ one of 14 B-17’s that still fly today. Flights are available Saturday, Feb. 27 and Sunday, Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m

The Gazette was invited on a media flight, and of course I took the ‘Liberty’ of going, as did Dave Norman and Dave Stall.

Going up into the air, we were belted down into our seats, not the seats you would see on a commercial airline, but benches and lawn chair looking seats. The same seats you see in the WWII movies when the soldiers are fighting the war in their aircraft. Although on this flight, the only war we were facing was who got to sit in the nose and who had the biggest grin. (I think I won on the grin.)
